East Idaho and the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership
What is GNEP?
GNEP is a comprehensive new international framework intended to guide the way nuclear energy systems are designed and deployed to:
- Extract the maximum amount of energy from nuclear fuel through recycling
- Dramatically reduce the length of time used fuel remains an environmental concern
- Keep nuclear materials in a form that discourages misuse.
How is East Idaho Involved?
GNEP includes three facilities that could be built in the region:
- A plant to recycle used nuclear fuel instead of using it only once and then storing or burying it
- A recycling reactor to help reduce nuclear waste and produce electricity
- An advanced fuel-cycle research facility to develop new kinds of reactor fuels.
In 2006, a team led by the Regional Development Alliance submitted a proposal to the Federal government to consider siting any or all of these facilities at Idaho National Laboratory, which lies in Bingham, Bonneville, Butte, Jefferson and Clark counties.
The role of the RDA is to work with the Department of Energy to foster economic development and diversification in the seven eastern Idaho counties most affected by the historical operations of Idaho National Laboratory.
